Your 2012 New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of the year where you look at all the areas of your life that could use improvement and set some goals. Of course, you have the obligatory eat better, lose weight, learn to play the trombone, etc. However, one area that’s often overlooked is your professional skill set. A good friend/colleague of mine, Danny Patterson, once said: We often spend so much time cutting down trees that we forget to sharpen the axe. While he might not … Continue reading

Creating an iPad application with Captivate

UPDATE: Now that Adobe Captivate 6 is released, you do not need the “HTML5 Converter for Captivate”.  Simply use the HTML5 Publishing feature to publish the HTML/CSS/JavaScript to add into PhoneGap. I’ve created a couple posts and videos about how to make an iPad application with Adobe Captivate.  This one is a winner though.  No command line hacks.  No complicated setup.  You can watch the video here. In the video, I’m combining a few different technologies to make it happen: … Continue reading

HTML5, Flash and Adobe

If you haven’t heard, Adobe Systems announced they will “no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations.” First, let’s understand what this means: Future devices will no longer be able to view Flash content in a web browser. For Flash developers, this really doesn’t change anything.  Before I explain why this doesn’t change anything, I want to say (and I’ll reiterate) that you can still use Flash Professional and Flash Builder to make … Continue reading

Slides from the October MN.swf Meeting

We had another great MN.swf meeting.  Adam Zucchi started things off talking about his mobile development experience and showed a lot of techniques he used to overcome some obstacles (showed lots of code too!).   Then Zara Gonzalez talked about her lessons-learned with four super cool mobile applications (also displayed her obsession with monsters…hehe). I ended the meeting with a lightning round of announcements from Adobe MAX.  My slides were packed full with links to more information. Here’s the slide deck … Continue reading

Two Videos: Creating custom Adobe Connect 8 pods

I’ve just finished two videos on creating custom pods for Adobe Connect 8 using the Collaboration Builder SDK.  Both Part 1 and Part 2 are posted to our Videos section. Part 1 demonstrates how to get started building a custom pod with Flash Builder and the Flex 3.5 framework.  This is great for developers because Flex is a fantastic framework to use for development.  However, Flash users are left a bit in the dark because not only do you need … Continue reading

Getting started with iPhone/iPad development

There’s a lot of excitement around mobile development.  When Adobe released Creative Suite 5 last year, they released their Packager for iPhone.  It’s a tool that converts Flash/Air applications to native iOS applications.  This tool was shipped with Flash CS5 and there are currently 1000′s of applications in the iTunes store that have been built with Flash. Don’t you love the irony? Over the next week or so, I will be posting a number of videos and tutorials on developing … Continue reading

“Cannot create property” error in Flash

I just spent an hour trying to fix this error.  When I finally did, I realized it was a super easy problem and should have only taken 10 seconds to fix.  Hopefully this post helps some else out there… The Setup I’m editing a Flash file that was created by someone else (which is why I was blindsided by this issue).  All the ActionScript is in a number of class files….nothing fancy, though.  I added an image to the stage … Continue reading

New tutorial video posted: Wallaby!

Adobe just posted Wallaby to their Labs website. Wallaby allows you to convert an FLA file to an HTML5 animation.  This allows animators to use Flash CS5 like they usually do to create banner ads and other animations.  The benefit is being able to convert that Flash animation to an HTML5 equivalent.  This video demonstrates how to add a Flash animation to a webpage, and then use Wallaby to provide an alternative HTML5 version.  Two animations for the price of … Continue reading

Android applications for the non-programmer

Are you a non-programmer with some basic Flash skills that REALLY wants to hop on the mobile bandwagon and make an application that will make you millions of dollars?  If so, I have a tutorial video for you!  I just uploaded another video on mobile development.  I wanted to demonstrate building a simple mobile applications and submitting it to the Android Marketplace.  This allows you to see the entire process.  The application is a simple reference application:  Click a button, … Continue reading

New videos posted: Testing Android Applications

I just posted two more videos about creating Android applications with Flash CS5.  The first video shows how to test your application on an Android Device.  The second video shows how to set up the Android Emulator and test your application (if you don’t have a device).  For the record, I highly recommend picking up a testing device if you are serious about mobile development.  The emulator doesn’t have the best performance and can be a little frustrating to set … Continue reading
