Adobe Captivate: Manage Hyperlinks

First off, if you missed the webinar on how to Create Software Simulations with Adobe Captivate, here’s a link to the recording:  Creating Software Simulations with Adobe Captivate Webinar.  We had a lot of positive feedback on this session so if you have time, check it out!

One of the webinar participants reached out to me after the session with a question about linking to a URL  in Adobe Captivate.

In her project, one of the slides includes a button with a link to a URL. When the learner clicks the button, the URL opens in the same window as the project. Her question:  ”Is there a way to set this up so the link opens in a new window? If so is that something I set up through Adobe Captivate or is that a setting/preference that I should be checking on the LMS side?”

What a great question. The answer is YES! You can have that link open in a new window. If you’re using Captivate 5/5.5, select the object that the user will click to open the URL. In the Action group of the Properties panel, there is a drop-down arrow next to the text box where you type in the URL  (see image below). Click this drop-down arrow to open the menu and click “New” to have the link open in a new window. Notice that when you click “New”, you’ll also see a check box at the bottom of the menu that says “Continue Playing Project”. This option will allow you to control whether the project continues to play when the new window opens or if the project should pause.
